Julia Eglantine Leader - Her Story

Born in 1929, Julia Leader grew up in Irish Town Bay Road and attended Irish Town Primary School. She was selected to sit for a scholarship to the Basseterre Girls High School, but due to was sent to perform domestic duties and missed the interview for the scholarship.

Julia was widowed at the age of 30 and was left the sole provider for her nine young children, working hard to ensure that they grew up with love, faith and education.  

​Julia has always stressed the importance of education not only to her children but to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well. It is with great pride and pleasure that the grandchildren, great grandchildren and all future generations of Julia Eglantine Leader dedicate this scholarship in her name.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the JEL Scholarship, a candidate must:
  • Be a National of St. Kitts and Nevis
  • Be a resident of the Irish Town area
  • Be in her final year of Primary School or First Form
  • Commit to completing her year(s) of high school education subsidized by the JEL scholarship
  • Demonstrate a commitment to service in her community
